Whitehall Gloves

Designed by Lori Smith

Adapted from a 1949 pattern for women's string gloves.

Sizes:

Gauge: 6 sts/inch in Stockinette St in OPTIMUM dk.

Materials:
      100 gr. Optimum dk yarn, 100% Optim Wool from South West Trading Company
      Shimmer-1 cone from South West Trading Company
      US 5 double point needles, or size needed to achieve gauge.
      2 stitch markers
      4 small stitch holders

Materials:
      CO: cast on
      PM: place marker
      P/U: pick up and knit
      ST-ST: stockinette stitch
      YO: yarn over
      REM: remaining
      K2tog: Knit two together. Insert the right needle through the second and first stitches on the left needle. Knit them as if they were one single stitch.
      K3tog: Knit three stitches together as one.
      Make one st: Insert the left needle into the thread between the next and previous stitches from front to back. With the right needle knit into the back of this to twist.

Lace stitch pattern: (Chart B)

Multiple of 5 + 2 (Knit in the round)

Round 1: * P2, K3 *, P2.

Round 2: Repeat Round 1.

Round 3: * P2, slip 3rd knit st. on left needle over other 2 knit sts, then knit those 2 stitches*, P2.

Round 4: * P2, K1, YO, K1 *, P2.

Note: Row 3 of Pattern has fewer sts in it. (If you end on Row 3, stitch count will vary from numbers provided)

Cuff: (Chart A)

With Shimmer and Optimum DK held together, cast on 55 st. Knit one round. Purl one round.

* Knit 3 together, YO, K1, YO, K3tog, YO, K2tog, K2tog*. Repeat 4 more times. (40 sts. Total) Knit 3 rounds, purl one round.

[ * K2tog, YO, K1, YO, K1, YO, K2tog, K2tog *. Repeat 4 more times. Knit 3 rounds, purl one round.] Repeat between brackets 1 more time.

Continue cuff in Optimum DK only. Knit 1 round while increasing evenly by 3 stitches. (43 sts. total)

Start lace pattern on 22 sts. for back of hand, keeping 21 sts. in st-st. for palm. Work a total of 3 repeats of lace pattern.

RIGHT GLOVE:

Right Thumb Gusset: (Chart C)

Round 1--Work row 1 of Lace Stitch Pattern up to last 2 P sts. PM, P1, M1, P1, PM, work st-st. to end of round.

Keeping in lace pattern and st-st. as established, increase as follows between markers for thumb gusset:

Round 2--M1, K3, M1.

Round 3--M1, P1, pass 3rd knit stitch over 2 sts, then K those 2 sts, P1, M1.

Round 4--P2, K1, YO, K1, P2.

Round 5--M1, P2, K3, P2, M1.

Round 6--P3, K3, P2, K1.

Round 7--M1, P3, pass 3rd knit stitch over 2 sts, then K those 2 sts, P2, K1, M1.

Round 8--P4, K1, YO, K1, P2, K2

Round 9--M1, P1, K1, P2, K3, P2, K2, M1.

Round 10--P2, K1, P2, K3, P2, K3.

Round 11--M1, P1, K2, P2, Pass 3rd st. over 2 sts and K those 2 sts, P2, K3, M1.

Round 12--P2, K2, P2, K1, YO, K1, P2, K4. (15 sts total between markers)

Continue in pattern without increasing until gusset measures 2¾" high.

Work across back sts, place thumb gusset sts on 2 holders, CO 2 sts to bridge gap, K across palm sts. (43 sts total, not counting thumb sts)

Keep in pattern and P over the 2 CO sts, work until hand is 3½" high from start of thumb gusset.

Little Finger:

Keep in pattern, work across 6 sts, put next 33 sts on 2 holders, CO 2 sts to bridge gap, K4.(12 sts total)

Next round--P2, K3, P2, K5.

Work in round on these sts in established pattern until little finger measures 2¼".

To complete finger: K 2 tog for 1 round. Cut yarn and run tail through rem sts to cinch down. Finish off tail inside finger.

Upper Hand:

Reattach yarn at base of little finger on back of hand, work in pattern across back of hand, K palm sts, P/U 2 sts at base of little finger. Complete 1 more round in pattern (K1, P1 over picked up sts).

Ring Finger:

Work over next 5 sts, place rem 23 sts on 2 holders, CO 2 sts to bridge gap, work across rem 7 sts. (14 sts total)

Work in pattern (P1, K1 over CO sts) until finger is 2½".

Complete as for little finger.

Middle Finger:

Reattach yarn at base of ring finger at back of hand. Work across 5 sts, place 13 sts on holder, CO 2 sts to bridge gap, work across rem 5 sts, P/U 2 sts at base of ring finger. (14 sts total)

Keeping in pattern (P1, K1 over CO sts and K1, P1 over picked up sts), work until finger is 3".

Complete as for little finger.

Index finger:

Reattach yarn at base of middle finger at back of hand. Work across 13 sts, P/U 2 sts at base of middle finger. (15 sts total).

Keeping in pattern (K1, P1 over picked up sts) work until finger is 2¾".

Complete as for little finger.

Thumb:

Reattach yarn at base of thumb on back of hand. Work across 15 sts, P/U 2 sts at base of thumb opening. (17 sts total)

Maintain lace pattern up thumb (p2, k3, p2 section) while keeping rem sts in st-st. Work until thumb is 2". K2tog around, end K1. (9 sts total) K2tog around, end K1. (5 sts total) Cut yarn and thread through rem sts to cinch down. Finish off tail inside thumb.

LEFT GLOVE:

Work cuff as for right glove until thumb gusset.

Left Thumb Gusset: (Chart D)

Round 1--PM, P1, M1, P1, PM. continue in lace pattern for back of hand and st-st for palm. Increase between markers as follows for thumb gusset:

Round 2--M1, K3, M1.

Round 3--M1, P1, slip 3rd st over 2 sts , then K those 2 sts, P1, M1.

Round 4--P2, K1, YO, K1, P2.

Round 5--M1, P2, K3, P2, M1.

Round 6--K1, P2, K3, P3.

Round 7--M1, K1, P2, slip 3rd st over 2 sts then K those 2 sts, P4.

Round 8--K2, P2, K1, YO, K1, P4.

Round 9--M1, K3, P2, K3, P2, K1, P1, M1.

Round 10--K3, P2, K3, P2, K1, P2.

Round 11--M1, K3, P2, slip 3rd st over 2 sts, then K those 2 sts, P2, K2, P1, M1.

Round 12--K4, P2, K1, YO, K1, P2, K2, P2. (15 st total between markers)

Continue in pattern without increasing until gusset measures 2¾" high.

Work across palm sts., place thumb gusset sts on 2 holders, CO 2 sts to bridge gap, work across back sts. (43 sts total, not counting thumb gusset sts)

Keeping in established pattern (P over the 2 CO sts), work in round until hand is 3½" high from start of thumb gusset.

Little Finger:

Work across 4 sts, put next 33 sts on 2 holders, CO 2 sts to bridge gap, work across rem 6 sts. (12 sts total)

Keeping in Pattern (K1, P1 over CO sts), complete as for Right Glove little finger.

Upper Hand:

Reattach yarn at base of little finger on palm side. Work 1 round in pattern, P/U 2 sts at base of little finger.

Complete 1 more round (K1, P1 over picked up sts).

Ring Finger:

Work over next 7 sts, place 23 sts on holders. CO 2 sts to bridge gap, work across rem 5 sts. (14 sts total) Keeping in pattern (K1, P1 over CO sts), complete as for Right Glove.

Middle Finger:

Reattach yarn at base of ring finger on palm side. Work across 5 sts, place 13 sts on holder, CO 2 sts to bridge gap, work across rem 5 sts, P/U 2 sts at base of ring finger. (14 sts total) Keeping in pattern (K1, P1 over CO sts and P1, K1 over picked up sts), complete as for right glove.

Index Finger:

Reattach yarn at base of middle finger on palm side. Work across 13 sts, P/U 2 sts at base of middle finger. (15 sts total) Keeping in pattern (P1, K1 over picked up sts), complete as for right glove.

Thumb:

Reattach yarn at base of thumb on palm side. Work across 15 sts, P/U 2 sts at base of thumb opening. (17 sts total) Complete as for right glove.
